Practice Projects

Some schools call them “clinicals”. But at JU, we refer to them as practice projects because they allow you to put your learning into practice – to help your career and your community.

As a working nurse, you need projects that are flexible and easy to work into your busy schedule. That’s why, just like the entire RN to BSN program, we’ve designed your practice projects around you.

“As a graduate from the BSN program at JU, I can say the experience was truly amazing. I was able to maintain my full-time job, and be a full-time wife and mother while completing my degree course work.”
Belinda Pickett, RN, BSN
Camden, SC

The BSN program requires completion of two courses that entail practice projects: NUR 451: Community Health Nursing Practice for the Experienced Nurse, and NUR 461: Professional Nursing Synthesis for the Experienced Nurse.

You Choose the Projects

Your practice projects give you an opportunity to explore subjects that you care about and inspire you. Whether your interest is pediatrics, geriatrics, education, or management, you can pick topics that are enjoyable to you.

Practice projects completed by recent JU graduates:

  • Establish a lower-stress environment for neurosurgical patients using music
  • Conduct in-services on stress management for emergency department staff
  • Develop a curriculum for client education about congestive heart failure, acute myocardial infarction, and cerebrovascular accidents
  • Build a nursing orientation manual for the emergency department
  • Design and propose a different staffing pattern
  • Develop an educational presentation on sickle cell disease for teachers and students at a local school

You Choose the Preceptor

Not only are the practice projects self-directed, you also get to choose the RN who mentors you through them. So you get to work one-on-one with someone you feel comfortable – someone who has already earned their bachelor’s degree (or higher) and can help guide you to the successful completion of your projects.

No Travel Required

You can even fulfill your project requirements right in your hometown or where you work – there’s no need to travel a long distance to complete them. You not only earn credit; you also make a positive difference in your facility or community.

“My instructor suggested that I present my project to my management at work… I received rave reviews from my management team as well as my instructor… I’m so glad I started the program at Jacksonville University. Thank you!"
Nancie Feld, BSN, RN, COHN-S
Austin, Texas

Apply Your Skills with Practice Projects in These Courses:

NUR 451: Community Health Nursing Practice for the Experienced Nurse

This eight-week, three-credit-hour class gives you an opportunity to take what you learned in the theory course and apply it in the community. In the Community Health Practice course you will assess the needs of a vulnerable population and determine and implement a nursing intervention.

Examples of local agencies used in projects:

  • Alzheimers day care center
  • Mobile health unit
  • School for pregnant middle school and high school students
  • Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
  • Outpatient dialysis center

NUR 461: Professional Nursing Synthesis for the Experienced Nurse

This eight-week, four-credit-hour capstone class allows you to utilize all the knowledge you have gathered from your BSN degree courses and put it into practice. The Nursing Synthesis class project focuses on leadership, nursing education, or a clinical resource perspective. Typical projects focus on education, administration, committee and policy development. You can complete your project at your current workplace, although it is preferred that it takes place in a different department.
